Daphne Freeman wrote a series of extremely interesting stories from interviewing people in old folk’s homes and other places. The stories from the series of over two hundred articles won her the Walkley Award for excellence in journalism in the mid nineteen eighties. She was the only person working for a regional newspaper in Australia to be awarded this honour I have always wondered why these stories were not published in a book form. After much searching i could not find a series in books so I contacted our local newspaper and after a few hiccups, I was granted permission to print these stories. Some stories date back to the 1850's and some are more recent. Stories of children ten years old having to go to work. large families’ living on scrubland with fourteen children to feed in small huts. Natives frightening the settlers who are isolated from neighbours. Stories any person would like to read. Learn the facts from years ago.
